Thank
you for visiting our website. I am Consul General Euy Whan Kim of the Consulate
General of the Republic of Korea in New York.
The
Republic of Korea has become one of the top ten economies in the world and is
ranked 6th in global power. Indeed, it can be said that these
achievements are attributed to the hard work and dedication of the Korean
people both in Korea and abroad. What’s more, based on an alliance of more than 70 years, Korea prospered owing to the rock-solid security cooperation and economic partnership with the United States. Korean
Americans played no small part in that process.
The
Consulate General covers five states in the northeastern United States: New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware. I’d like to mention that
Korean communities in this region have been playing leading roles worth noting
in Korean immigration history while making significant contributions to Korea’s
development. Moreover, historically, the region served as a base of operation
for many Korean patriots, including former President Syngman Rhee and Dr. Philip
Jaisohn, in their extraordinary efforts to restore Korea’s independence and national
sovereignty. Once Korea started attracting the world’s attention, many Koreans
came to New York, the financial capital of the world.
From
here, in their new homes, they set off on their journeys by making inroads into
various fields, providing a roadmap to success for other immigrant communities
and being the shining examples of the best of Korea, the land of their old
homes. Today, the 1.5 and 2nd-generation Korean Americans are making
their marks as rising leaders here in this center of global commerce, finance,
and culture and showcasing all the best traits of the Korean people. I am
convinced that such remarkable accomplishments could have only been possible through
first-generation Korean immigrants’ dedication, sacrifice, and hard work.
The
Consulate General opened its doors in 1949. For more than 70 years, we have
been working to unite the Korean community and empower them. At the same time,
we’ve also been strengthening the cooperative relations between Korea and the
states we cover while enhancing our bilateral people-to-people exchanges. In
addition, we have been and will continue to diligently carry out our duties of ensuring
Koreans visiting or living in the region are safe, providing various consular
services, supporting activities of Korean businesses, and enhancing the mutual
understanding between the two peoples.
Going
forward, the Consulate General will continue to prioritize the safety and
rights of Korean nationals and the Korean American communities. As such, we
will make special efforts to provide more convenient consular services. In
addition, we will be engaging and working closely with the Korean community to support
them in their endeavors to foster community development and empowerment. At the
same time, we will march in lockstep with them to further enhance the enduring
friendship and close partnership between Korea and the United States.
I
appreciate your continued interest and support for the Consulate General’s
endeavors.
Thank
you.
